Review:
This book was very interesting and kept me turning page after page. The themes were diverse and at the same time interesting (death, religion, teenage love, cults, family life, school) so the book had more than one dimension, as the characters.
One thing that I really appreciated is that the author doesn't push religion into us!
The plot is intense and the twists are not as predictable as you may think.
Being this a book that deals with death is important to know (well at least I think it's important) that you won't cry during all the book, but you will cry (well, I cried).
I love the end of the book it is so intense and with so much psychological action that made stop reading it  impossible.
The characters seemed real, and I really liked that they focused on other stuff besides the main problem, because that just made me believe more in them. Many authors fall in the mistake of making all the characters focus only on the main problem and when that happens I usually finish the book with the sense that I didn't really know them.
Tessa, is 100% my favorite character, she is smart, determinated and doesn't worry about what others think of her, but she knows to admit when she's wrong (of course in her own strange way but still...) and she copes with her difficult life in a way that fascinates me.
I just wish that we knew a little bit more of Faith.
Overall is a well written book with an interesting story.
Check it out.

  • Everything I Was  by Corinne Demas - It's about a girl from Upper West Side that ends up living in her grandfather house because her family is broke.
  • The Last Full Measure by Ann Rinaldi - It's an historical fiction and sounds interesting.

Review:
The thing that made me want to read this book in the first place was the mix of mythology with a contemporary problem that is anorexia.
I thought this was a good book and it was interesting and funny to read it!
The first pages of the book were a bit confusing but after you get through them the book becomes more interesting.
.: SPOILLERS:.
The plot is intriguing (in a good way) even though a little predictable, and I really enjoyed the descriptions of the hunger around the world and the contrast between the rich civilization where food is a regular part of the day to day life and the poor countries where people eat dirt cookies and rats because they're the only things that are to eat.
My favourite character was Death. He had an interesting sense of humour but he could easily become a frightening creature.  Lisabeth’s character is interesting too but maybe because of the confusing first pages I ended the book with the felling that I didn’t know her that well.
One thing that I loved was the fact  the narrator used multiple POVs so we could "see" the plot from the eyes of different characters and have different perspectives of the story.
.:END OF SPOILLERS:.
This book made me re-think about some things that I take for granted but for some people are very rare.
8/10

Waiting for Payday ( 4)

Waiting for the Payday is a new meme hosted by Bookish Snob that allows bloggers to share books that they are desperate to read even if they have already been out for a while but that they just don't have the money for!
This week the book that I'm desperate to read:
                                                         Twenty Boy Summer
Title: Twenty Boy Summer
Author: Sarah Ockler
Publisher:Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: June 1st 2009
Summary: "Don't worry, Anna. I'll tell her, okay? Just let me think about the best way to do it."
"Okay."
"Promise me? Promise you won't say anything?"
"Don't worry." I laughed. "It's our secret, right?"

According to her best friend Frankie, twenty days in Zanzibar Bay is the perfect opportunity to have a summer fling, and if they meet one boy ever day, there's a pretty good chance Anna will find her first summer romance. Anna lightheartedly agrees to the game, but there's something she hasn't told Frankie---she's already had that kind of romance, and it was with Frankie's older brother, Matt, just before his tragic death one year ago.

Beautifully written and emotionally honest, this is a debut novel that explores what it truly means to love someone and what it means to grieve, and ultimately, how to make the most of every single moment this world has to offer.

My thoughts: I've been reading Sarah Ockler blog and I find it very interesting. This book has recently been challenged but I've just heard amazing things about it.

This week the book that I'm desperate to read is:

    Title: Wintergirls
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson (I love her)
    Publisher:Viking Juvenile
    Release Date: March 19, 2009
Summary:  “Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
    I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie were best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies. But now Cassie is dead. Lia's mother is busy saving other people's lives. Her father is away on business. Her step-mother is clueless. And the voice inside Lia's head keeps telling her to remain in control, stay strong, lose more, weigh less. If she keeps on going this way—thin, thinner, thinnest—maybe she'll disappear altogether.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the National Book Award finalist Speak, best-selling author Laurie Halse Anderson explores one girl's chilling descent into the all-consuming vortex of anorexia

(details above from Amazon, Goodreads and Google Books)

I really loved other books from LHA (you can see my review of Speak, her first YA, here), she writes extremly well and her books are always funny, intelligent and powerful.

(Details above from Goodreads and Netgalley)

Review: This is probably the best book that I ever read.
The plot is amazing and unpredictable, the characters are believable and the writing is fantastic and easy to understand!
It’s amazing how Jane Eagland manages to write historical fiction were some contemporary issues are present.
    .: END SPOILLERS:.
The historical marks are very present and they’re responsible for most of the plot twists since most of them are related to some contemporary issues and traditions from the Victorian era(where every scene from the plot happens). But this doesn’t make the book boring, no, it makes it even more interesting since they make the plot impossible of guessing, keeping the reader very interested.
The book is not full of description (as other historical fiction books are) but we can imagine the places where the action takes place and some of the character physical and psychological characteristics due to small “hints” during the narration.
The change between past events and present events allows the reader to get a better perspective in the main character ( Louisa) life and creates suspense and intrigue causing the reader a need of turning page after page.
The characters are very believable as I said before and personally I loved Eliza character. She is so kind and feminine but at the same time competent and strong minded. I really liked Louisa character too. She isn’t afraid of breaking barriers. She isn’t a flat character, she responds differently to different problems that she faces.
    .: SPOILLERS:.
I think that most of people will love this book since compiles so many issues, many of them contemporary, and because it fits in so many genres: historical fiction, feminist literature, thriller, suspense, mystery,…

    Wainting for Payday (2)

Waiting for the Payday is a new meme hosted by Bookish Snob that allows bloggers to share books that they are desperate to read even if they have already been out for a while!

This week the book that I'm desperate to read is:

    Title: Chosen
    Authors: P.C. and Kristin Cast
    Release Date: 4/03/2008
    Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Series: House of the Night (book 3)

Summary: Dark forces are at work at the House of Night and fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird’s adventures at the school take a mysterious turn.  Those who appear to be friends are turning out to be enemies.  And oddly enough, sworn enemies are also turning into friends.  So begins the gripping third installment of this “highly addictive series” (Romantic Times), in which Zoey’s mettle will be tested like never before.  Her best friend, Stevie Rae, is undead and struggling to maintain a grip on her humanity. Zoey doesn’t have a clue how to help her, but she does know that anything she and Stevie Rae discover must be kept secret from everyone else at the House of Night, where trust has become a rare commodity.  Speaking of rare: Zoey finds herself in the very unexpected and rare position of having three boyfriends. Mix a little bloodlust into the equation and the situation has the potential to spell social disaster.  Just when it seems things couldn’t get any tougher, vampyres start turning up dead. Really dead. It looks like the People of Faith, and Zoey’s horrid step-father in particular, are tired of living side-by-side with vampyres.  But, as Zoey and her friends so often find out, how things appear rarely reflects the truth…

I really want to read this book because I'm a fan of the series and I love the world of House of the Night created by P.C. Cast and her daughter! The other books made meturn page after page (actually I've finishe them in one day (one in each day), even Marked kept my interest even not being my favourite) so I can't wait to read this book!

PS-  Today I couldn't post this earlier because my drama group was doing Romeo and Juliet, sorry !

    Title: Crescendo
    Author: Becca Fitzpatrick
    Publisher: Simon&Schuster
    Release Date:: October 19, 2010
Summary: Nora should have known her life was far from perfect. Despite starting a relationship with her guardian angel, Patch (who, title aside, can be described as anything but angelic), and surviving an attempt on her life, things are not looking up. Patch is starting to pull away and Nora can't figure out if it's for her best interest or if his interest has shifted to her arch-enemy, Marcie Millar. Not to mention that Nora is haunted by images of her father and she becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to him that night he left for Portland and never came home.
The further Nora delves into the mystery of her father's death, the more she comes to question if her Nephilim bloodline has something to do with it as well as why she seems to be in danger more than the average girl. Since Patch isn't answering her questions and seems to be standing in her way, she has to start finding the answers on her own. Relying too heavily on the fact that she has a guardian angel puts Nora at risk again and again. But can she really count on Patch or is he hiding secrets darker than she can even imagine?

You can already preview the prologue and the first chapter here (click on the section on the top of the page where is written “Crescendo” and download the file).

Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast

    Title: Marked
    Authors: P.C. Cast, Kristin Cast
    Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Series: House of Night (book 1)
    Release Date: May, 2007
Summary: The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed.  In this first book in the series, Zoey enters the House of Night, a school where, after having undergone the Change, she will train to become an adult vampire--that is, if she makes it through the Change.  Not all of those who are chosen do.  It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling.  She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx.  But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers.  When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends

(details above are from Goodreads and the publisher)

Review: This book wasn't exactly what I was expecting! I couldn't relate with the characters from the beginning which is really frustrating since I enjoy a story much more when I can identify myself with its cast.
Some things just didn't seem well, if Zoey couldn't integrate in her school (human regular school) how could she had possibly dated the most popular guy from the school football team?
I kind of liked the idea of Nyx, and the relation that the vampyres had with Nature. In other paranormal and horror books, vampires are always some kind of monsters that aren't part of Nature but in Marked some vampyres are even gifted with elements’ (earth, water, fire and air) control. But I must say that in the beginning I thought the all thing a non-sense (I think reading the second book really helped me to appreciate more the series and the all Nyx thing).
I found really annoying that the word vampire was written vampyre.
I love that one of the characters was gay! I think it's really important the existence of gay characters in YA novels since there are teenagers dealing with sexual orientation problems, and afraid of coming out and tell the society  they are homosexual because of the reactions that they think they will get.
The end was predictable as most of the plot but I continue to turn page after page because, even though I had some ideas about what was going to happened I still was not 100% sure.
The writing is very good and even though it was not my favourite book I bought the second one (and LOVE it - I'll post the review as quickly as I can) .

    • My Misadventures as a Teenage Rock Star by Joyce Raskin - Again it's 2011 debut so I'll just review it when the realising date is close but I'm really looking forward to read it (maybe I'll cheat)
         From the Publisher:
    • Moon Rise and Moon Spun by Marilee Brothers- I read and already reviewed the first book of  the series and I liked it so this books should be good!
What did you get this week?
